Por muito tempo houve a controvérsia sobre a autoria da obra “Queda que as mulheres têm para os tolos”, uma crítica ácida, irônica e mordaz. Tal confusão começa com Machado de Assis, cujo nome estampou a publicação no Brasil. Não sabíamos se era autoria do Bruxo do Cosme Velho, inspirada na obra homônima L’amour des femmes pour les sots, do belga Victor Hénaux, ou a tradução desse trabalho. Recentemente chegou-se ao ‘meio-termo’.A obra foi traduzida e adaptada por Machado, ou seja, é de Hénaux, com edições machadianas, o que faz do belga o autor primário e do brasileiro o autor secundário. Uma solução para desagradar a francos e brasilianos
